The Historic 07 District is a unique compilation of neighborhoods and communities on the south side of Fort Wayne, Indiana. The District contains the most significant number of historic neighborhoods in Northeast Indiana. Many of our neighborhoods maintain both national and local historical status. This website has been created to promote the Historic 07 District and all it has to offer. Although the name “07 District” creates the assumption that it must be referring to the 46807 neighborhoods, 07 is merely a moniker for a broader community rooted in historic commonalities from the 46802, 46806, and 46807 zip codes.

The northwestern boundary is at the commercial District at the corner of Broadway and Taylor Streets. Although this area is in the 46802 zip code, Augustus Beaver originally built the Fort Wayne Lumber Company near the intersection. Augustus Beaver was one of the original residents of what is now known as Oakdale. Also, many of the neighborhoods following south on Broadway and east on Taylor were the residences for workers at the Lumber Company, Electric Works, and the Railroad. Finally, the actual homes in these neighborhoods were built around the same time.

The northeastern boundary is at the corner of Grand and Calhoun. This area is outside of the 46807, but it represented the original boundary of the 6th Ward. Before zip codes, areas of town were mapped out in different wards. The 6th Ward included everything south of the railroad at Calhoun on the east and to Broadway, including Electric Works to the west. Although the Ward system continued to change, even in the 1920s, the 6th Ward was changed to the 11th Ward, and it encompassed the same corner all the way south to Pettit.

The District continues South on Calhoun Street and includes the neighborhoods bound by Rudisill, Clinton, and Lafayette at the corner of Pettit. This area has a significant home development know as Lafayette Place, which was developed by the Wildwood Builders Company. This company was responsible for many developments throughout the District. Finally, the District continues south on Calhoun to Tillman and then follows the river back up to the Broadway and Taylor corner.  Learn more about our history and neighborhoods.
